WASHINGTON (October 11, 2007)Pope Benedict XVI named Bishop Jaime Soto, Auxiliary Bishop of Orange, California, to be Coadjutor Bishop of Sacramento, California. Bishop Soto is 51.
The appointment as coadjutor bishop confers on Bishop Soto the right to succession to Bishop William K. Weigand of Sacramento. Bishop Weigand is 70.
The announcement was made in Washington, October 11, by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.
Jaime Soto was born December 31, 1955, in Inglewood, California. He attended St. Johns Seminary College in Camarillo, California, and there earned his bachelor of arts degree in philosophy in 1978, and master of divinity degree in 1982. He earned a master of social work degree from Columbia University School of Social Work in 1986.
He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Orange in 1982, and was appointed Titular Bishop of Segia and Auxiliary Bishop of Orange, March 23, 2000.
Bishop Sotos pastoral experience includes work in Catholic Charities, immigration reform and ministry to the Hispanic community. He has served on several church and community boards including the boards of United Way of Orange County; Catholic Charities of Orange County; the Hispanic Education Endowment Fund, Orange County Community Foundation; Pacific Council on International Policy; the Diocesan Council of Priests and St.Vincent DePaul Society.
As a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops he is a member of the USCCB Administrative Committee; Chairman of the Committee on the Church in Latin America; a member of the Committee on the Laity and its Subcommittee for Youth and Young Adults; and the Ad Hoc Committee for the Spanish Language Bible. He is treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc., CLINIC.
