Pope names seminary professor auxiliary bishop of St Paul-Minneapolis

WASHINGTON—Pope Francis has named Father Andrew Cozzens, 45, associate professor at St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity in St. Paul, Minnesota, as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

WASHINGTON—Pope Francis has named Father Andrew Cozzens, 45, associate professor at St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity in St. Paul, Minnesota, as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

The appointment was publicized in Washington, October 11, by Msgr. Angelo Accattino, chargé d’affaires at the apostolic nunciature to to the United States.

Andrew Cozzens was born August 3, 1968, in Stamford, Connecticut. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Philosophy from Benedictine College, Atchison, Kansas; a master of theology and a master of divinity degrees from St. Paul Seminary; and a licentiate and doctorate in sacred theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas (The Angelicum) in Rome.

Bishop-elect Cozzens was ordained in the archdiocese, where his first assignment was as parochial vicar of the Cathedral of St. Paul, 1997-2000. Other assignments included parochial vicar, Sacred Heart/St. Lawrence/Immaculate Conception Parishes, Faribault, Minnesota; graduate studies in Rome, 2002-2006; and faculty of St. Paul Seminary, 2006-present. Other assignments included parochial vicar, St. Vincent de Paul Parish, St. Paul, 2006-2008; assistant director, archdiocesan office of worship, 2008-2010; co-chaplain, Twin Cities Serra Club, 2011-present and adjunct professor for the Institute for Priestly Formation, Omaha, 2009-present.
