Pope Names Auxiliary Bishop of Atlanta as Coadjutor Bishop of Alexandria

WASHINGTON—Pope Francis has named Bishop David P. Talley, up until now Auxiliary Bishop of Atlanta, as Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Alexandria, Louisiana. The appointment was publicized in Washington, September 21, by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

WASHINGTON—Pope Francis has named Bishop David P. Talley, up until now Auxiliary Bishop of Atlanta, as Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Alexandria, Louisiana.

The appointment was publicized in Washington, September 21, by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.  

David P. Talley was born in Columbus, Georgia on September 11, 1950. He pursued seminary studies at Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in Indiana and was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Atlanta in 1989.

He pursued post-graduate studies, 1993-1998, at the Gregorian University in Rome, where he was awarded a doctorate in canon law in 1998. In 2001, Pope John Paul II named him a prelate of honor with the title of monsignor.  

Assignments after ordination included: parochial vicar, St. Jude Parish, Sandy Springs, 1989-1993; administrator [interim] St. Matthew's Parish, Tyrone, 2001; pastor, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Alpharetta, 2003-2006; parochial vicar, St. Anne's Parish, Columbus, 2006-2007; pastor, St. John Neumann Parish, Lilburn, 2007-2011; pastor, St. Brigid Parish, Johns Creek, 2011-2013.

Bishop Talley has served the Archdiocese of Atlanta in other assigned appointments including: director of vocations, tribunal judge, judicial vicar, chancellor, archdiocesan Hispanic ministry board and on the advisory board for the archdiocese representing priests.  

Bishop Talley was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Atlanta, January 3, 2013 and was ordained a bishop on April 2, 2013.  

The appointment as coadjutor bishop confers on Bishop Talley, 66, the right to succession of Bishop Ronald P. Herzog, current bishop of Alexandria. Bishop Herzog is 74.  

The Diocese of Alexandria comprises 11,108 square miles in central Louisiana. It has a population of 368,065 people of whom, 36,280, or 10 percent, are Catholic.
