WASHINGTON—Followingthis morning's bulletin from the Holy See that a Vatican diplomat based inWashington had been recalled to face an investigation for alleged violation ofchild pornography laws, the President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops,Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston has issued the followingstatement:

"Thisis a serious issue. We hope the Holy See will be forthcoming with more details.While we don't know all the facts, consistent with our Charter, we reaffirm thatwhen such allegations occur, an immediate, thorough, and transparentinvestigation should begin in cooperation with law enforcement and immediatesteps be taken to protect children. The protection of children and young peopleis our most sacred responsibility."
