Mass in Time of Pandemic

The Church prays to the Lord in difficult times

Responding to the spiritual needs of the clergy and the faithful during the ongoing scourge of the 2019-2020 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Holy See's Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has released the text of a special Mass, entitled "In Time of Pandemic." It may be used by bishops and priests for the duration of the crisis.

This Mass can be celebrated, according to the rubrics given for Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions, on any day except Solemnities, the Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter, days within the Octave of Easter, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls' Day), Ash Wednesday, and the days of Holy Week (see General Instruction of the Roman Missal [GIRM], no. 374).

"Masses for Various Needs… are celebrated in the color proper to the day or the time of year or in violet if they have a penitential character" (GIRM, no. 347).
