National Pro-Life Postcard & E-Mail Campaign to Congress
What is the National Postcard Campaign?
In November 2008, the full body of bishops voted unanimously to mobilize the resources of the USCCB, dioceses and the entire Catholic community to:
- retain current pro-life laws and policies, and
- oppose the federal funding and promotion of abortion, including the so-called “Freedom of Choice Act” (FOCA) or any similar pro-abortion measure.
The Committee on Pro-Life Activities has authorized a national pro-life postcard campaign to send that message to Congress. Launching on January 24-25, 2009, this massive campaign is being coordinated by the USCCB’s Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities and the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment (NCHLA).
Who May Participate?
All concerned citizens – regardless of creed -- are invited to join their voices with ours. The cards, available in packages of 1,000, are designed for general use from constituents to their elected representatives.
Why Now?
Our voice is needed now more than ever.
As soon as the 111th Congress convenes, many pro-life laws and policies are subject to attack and reversal. The new Congress includes the largest number of pro-abortion members since 1993, so holding on to these pro-life provisions will be a great challenge.
If abortion advocates and their allies in Congress have their way, the “right” to abortion will actually expand, for the first time making abortion a federal entitlement that the government must fund and promote.Passing the “Freedom of Choice Act” would achieve these pro-abortion goals in one extreme piece of federal legislation, though this same “FOCA agenda” could be pursued in a series of smaller steps. Indeed, 63 pro-abortion groups have publicly submitted a comprehensive 55-page blueprint for their agenda to the incoming Administration. Passing FOCA is a priority of theirs to promote abortion.
FOCA goes far beyond the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion decision. No other piece of legislation would have such a destructive impact on society’s ability to limit or regulate abortion.
According to recent nationwide polling, only 9% of U.S. adults support abortion for any reason throughout the nine months of pregnancy, which is the current state of abortion law. FOCA would deprive the American people of the freedom they now have to set at least some limits on the abortion industry.
The national postcard campaign will send a timely message to Congress that abortion advocates are out of step with mainstream America, and that their agenda should not become a part of our nation’s laws in any way.
