Pope Names Seminary Vice-Rector Auxiliary Bishop of Phoenix

WASHINGTON—Pope Benedict XVI has named Father Eduardo A. Nevares, 56, Vice-Rector of the Pontifical College Josephinum, Columbus, Ohio, and a priest of the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, as Auxiliary Bishop of Phoenix, assigning him the Titular See of Natchez.
           
The appointment was publicized in Washington, May 11, by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
           
Eduardo Nevares was born February 19, 1954, in San Antonio. He studied at LaSalette Minor Seminary, Jefferson City, Missouri; St. Henry Preparatory Seminary, Belleville, Illinois; LaSalette Junior College Seminary and LaSalette Senior College Seminary, Ipswich, Massachusetts; and the University of St. Thomas, Houston, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976.
           
He entered the novitiate of the Missionaries of Our Lady of LaSalette in 1976, professed first vows in 1977, and final vows in 1980.
           
He earned Master of Divinity Degree at Kenrick Seminary, in St. Louis, in 1981, and was ordained a priest, July 18, 1981, at St. Patrick Church, Lufkin, Texas.
           
After ordination he served as Parochial Vicar, St. Patrick Parish, 1981-1988; Vocations Director of the LaSalette Missionaries, 1988-1991; Parochial Vicar, Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Jacksonville, Florida, 1991; Catholic chaplain at University of Stephen P. Austin, Nacogdoches, Texas, 1992-1993; Pastor, St. Patrick’s Parish, 1993-2002; Provincial Counselor, Province of Mary Our Queen, LaSalette Missionaries, 1994-1997; and Co-Director of Vocations for Holy Orders and Consecrated Life, Diocese of Tyler, 2001-2008.
