What is AIDS? What is HIV?  

AIDS is an acronym that stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is not just one disease but a collection of life-threatening diseases (including certain very harmful viruses and other infections, including tuberculosis, a rare form of pneumonia and various forms of cancers) that attack the body when its immune system is severely compromised. AIDS is caused by HIV – Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
