V Encuentro Proceedings and Conclusions

Proceedings and Conclusions of the V National Encuentro of Hispanic/Latino Ministry | 95 • Hispanic/Latino Catholics should be encouraged to witness to their personal faith in Jesus when engaging others. Ecumenical mentoring sessions with role-play could facilitate conversations. IV. Successful and Exemplary Practices • Encourage collaboration and relationship-building through prayer and joint advocacy for social justice. • Ecumenical faith-based organizations that receive funding from the U.S. bishops through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development provide one avenue for collaboration on social justice issues affecting local communities. • Frame the ecumenical encounter as part of Catholic catechetical formation and not as an infringement upon Catholic identity formation. • Highlight important ecumenical documents that many may not have ever encountered: Unitatis Redintegratio (Vatican II’s Decree on Ecumenism) and Ut Unum Sint by Pope John Paul II. • Relationship, which is an important piece of Hispanic/Latino(a) identity, is also a key piece of ecumenical dialogue. Encourage people to explore faith in relationships openly and sincerely, without expectation of changing someone else’s faith perspective. • Catholic groups are sometimes built more on Evangelical and apologetic forms of evangelization than an authentic Catholic ecumenical structure of dialogue. Find ways to engage those groups in a reflection on the Church’s teaching about the value and importance of ecumenical dialogue. V.
